Regenerating natural ecosystems with Microsoft
How can a company as large as Microsoft help to regenerate nature? In this episode, we discuss how the organisation is designing its rapidly-growing number of data centres to become sanctuaries of biodiversity with Kaitlin Chuzi, Microsoft’s Director of Biomimicry and Advanced Ecosystems, and Alessandra Pistoia, Microsoft’s Circular Economy Lead. We’ll hear how data centres, often seen as energy-intensive infrastructures, are being leveraged to rejuvenate natural ecosystems. We’ll also learn how excess heat from data centres is being repurposed to support agricultural activities and renewable energy projects, and how data centres can play a pivotal role in environmental monitoring and restoration projects.

From food waste to wealth | Other Ways of Living

Our global food system currently relies on industrialised, chemically intensive monoculture production. But rather than bending nature to produce food, people are redesigning it so that nature can thrive. In this short explainer, we meet Deepanker Kholsa who challenges us to rethink our food design to ensure that it is better for customers, farmers and business. Watch the full 3-part series 'Ot...
Pushing the boundaries of EPR policy for textiles
Переглядів 26814 днів тому
Around the world, more than 80% of textiles leak out of the system when they are discarded. We need a new approach: a circular economy for textiles. A key part of this solution is Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). Mandatory, fee-based EPR policy places responsibility on producers with regard to the collection, sorting and recirculation of the products they place on the market. EPR also cr...

Every second, the equivalent of an entire rubbish truckload of clothes is burnt or buried in landfill. But people are rethinking our relationship with clothes and pushing the frontiers of what's possible, circulating them through repairs, resales and even upgrades. Amechi Ihenacho is one of those people, and in this short explainer he tells us his story. Thank you for watching this video. The E...

Changing from the linear economy to the circular one will happen when we change our way of thinking.... there is a great plan for that on the funwritings website.... ecofriendly tips are simplified and children are developing green habits as they prepare for the future in the best way. The adults who are resisting change are getting on board because the eco-kids project offer poetry books and writing services for them. We can become the change

Wow. This really got to me. I've been building a videogame for a while. It's a space trading game called Gravity Break, and I've wanted to explore alternative economies to the traditional model portraied in games, where you move trade goods around or solve missions to buy a new, better, bigger ship and upgrades. The last ship and upgrade you had may be sold, but you don't really consider the quality of reuse in most games. And rockets are being used, which is a pretty big win for reusability, despite the environmental impact of using their engines. A space trading game seems like a perfect theater for exploring the conundrum of capitalist exploitation of the earth. I've realised I want to demonstrate a cirkular economy, which isn't all that difficult, but can be scaled up in complexity. I start out with resources, producers, products and consumers. For some industries, the consumers generate the resources, and the supply chain becomes a loop. One example is cheese, which is the primary resource of my game. First, you should know that the characters of my game are all talking animals. In the lore, an AI has teamed up with a gang of lab rats to overthrow humanity and start fresh. They started implanting everyone, and most mamals are now fully cognisant. On the moon, the poop of consumers are used for the wheat fields that sustain a growing population of cows, who produce milk for the cheese.

I can tell you that most of the reuse of used textiles in the USA is in the informal economy. I work at 4 different renaissance faires in Oregon and half of the costumes I see worn there are old clothes that have been recut and remade into new articles of clothing... And as a community we have been repairing & recutting old clothes to make costume pieces for renaissance faires since the first Renaissance Pleasure Faire started in the early 1960's.

In other words, the corporations will own everything, you will rent all of your products from them, and when you want something new you will turn in your old products and exchange them. And the best part is, since you don't actually own anything, it will be a lot easier for the government to control and suppress political dissent.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: Living systems follow a circular model where waste is minimal and nutrients flow back into the soil Human society operates on a linear approach of take, make, and dispose, which is unsustainable Shifting towards a circular economy involves rethinking and redesigning products to be compostable and recyclable Products can be designed to be disassembled and regenerated instead of being thrown away Shifting towards a circular economy requires collaboration among all companies to create systemic change and use renewable energy sources Made with HARPA AI

This video beautifully illustrates how the principles of the circular economy can guide us towards a more sustainable future. It's inspiring to see how we can learn from the efficiency and resilience of natural systems to reimagine our economic model. Let's continue to spread awareness and take action towards building a world where resources are valued, waste is minimized, and prosperity is shared. Together, we can make a difference! #circulareconomy ♻🌍

I suspect that we are seeing the 20% of the 80/20 rule here. It is still early days in awareness building around the circular economy among the general public. So it's no surprise to me that most people are not yet ready to go wholeheartedly into the sharing or rental space. All the expansions of sharing, like AirBnB, Uber, etc are changing the perceptions around sharing and rental. I've been talking about MUD since they first started their experiments in rental. Behavior change follows awareness building, so there's going to be a lag in takeup. As we talk up these new approaches, show successes and people become familiar with the quality and cost of services, so more will come into our tent.

Alan Kay's commenting on masking did not age well. I lived in Sweden during the pandemic and none of us wore masks, social distanced or locked down. And our hospitals never got overwhelmed. And we did it completely unvaccinated, at least in 2020. I put this comment, but it got shadowbanned. Trying again.
